CentOS seems to be a major player as far as OS's go for servers. But some people prefer to use Debian instead. My question is, isn't CentOS already pre-configured to be used as a server whereas Debian would basically just have to run Apache? Or am I way off base here?

Centos is based on the Redhat distribution, that's why it's a very popular OS. It's stable, up-to-date and offer several packages to be used in production.
Debian is also a server distribution, but build by the debian community, when Centos is the open-source version of RHEL.

I prefer debian because it's more friendly for the configuration, and offer with the dotdeb.org repository all the softwares needed for a server.

No doubt CentOS is one of the Major player , the reason is its simplicity , compatibility with the third party control panels , softwares and easy administration. The LAMP stacks that is linux, apache, mysql and PHP is generally based on CentOS and can be installed easily using centos. Centos has many flavours like core server , minimal , full etc.... you have to choose the version as per your requirements.

Any Linux distribution is "server ready" it all depends on the packages installed during installation.
CentOS is only as popular as it is due to being one of the few supported distributions for cPanel.

I would go with Debian every time if a panel was not needed or using Plesk etc.
Debian uses older tried a tested software/kernels etc. and is more solid and stable imo.

I personally agree with you about Debian and understand Linux distros are all generally server ready (isn't any system with Apache?). I think I was getting at that CentOS is optimized for server use. And I didn't know that it was a successor of Redhat, which explains its "expertise."

Another great advantage of CentOS is that you have a very rich community which plenty of documentation and knowledgable people ready to assist others. Plenty of communities online to learn from.
