As you heard, it is click through rate. To expand on this though, I'd like to add that CTR is one of the most manipulatable figures you can measure. It depends on your meta descriptions and website or landing page. Here's an example of a poor-performing meta tag for CTR (the meta description is what shows up under your link describing your site on search engines).

<meta name="description" content="click here" />

That's a bad choice.

Here's a better choice!

<meta name="description" content="click here for a good time" />

Alas, the ladder meta content will surely optimize your CTR :D

Hello

I think the question is not understood properly here, here he is asking a number rather than definition of CTR. I know that CTR for a first position content is determined to be anywhere between 30-40%, but not quite sure what is the CTR for Google ad placement above first position.

I use a general figure of 2% when it comes to a CTR for Google Adwords.
Even less if its a banner display ad. More in the region of 0.0something...

However, having said that, everyone gets different CTR figures and it's important that you do enough impressionable activity and tests to find out what sort of CTR you average at and look to improve that. But 2% for adwords is a good starting point, even less for Display advertising.

Does this address you original question?

Clickthrough rate (CTR): Definition
A ratio showing how often people who see your ad end up clicking it. CTR can be used to gauge how well your keywords and ads are performing.
  • CTR is the number of clicks that your ad receives divided by the number of times your ad is shown: clicks ÷ impressions = CTR. For example, if you had 5 clicks and 1000 impressions, then your CTR would be 0.5%.
  • Each of your ads and keywords have their own CTRs that you can see listed in your account.
  • A high CTR is a good indication that users find your ads helpful and relevant. CTR also contributes to your keyword's expected CTR (a component of Quality Score), which can affect your costs and ad position. Note that a good CTR is relative to what you're advertising and on which networks.
  • You can use CTR to gauge which ads and keywords are successful for you and which need to be improved. The more your keywords and ads relate to each other and to your business, the more likely a user is to click on your ad after searching on your keyword phrase.

You can see the directly definition from Google here: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2615875?hl=en

CTR depends on the positions of ad placements, & what kind of AD Copy you are creating. First & Third Ads are always has higher clicks rather than the second ad. And most importantly you have to optimize the campaigns all the time to increase the CTR

I wonder what is CTR for ad results in Google serp? is it really useful in getting traffic more than the first placed search result?
CTR is the number of people that clicks on a link rationed to the number of people that viewed a page advert,

It is used to measure the success of an advert in a website , Yes it is also useful to get traffic because users fall in with that page even after visiting another site, they won't be satisfied they will still come to the place they get what they want...

Hope you are satisfied

CTR is Click through rate. As the name suggests CTR is a ratio showing how often people who see your ad end up clicking it.
It is calculated by dividing the number of clicks that your ad receives by the number of times your ad is shown(impression).

It will help you to identify the keywords that are more beneficial for your ad that is running.
