Hi DaRecordon

I would suggest the .com once you have that domain also a good idea to grab the.us or the country specific TLD of where your target audience is located.

.Con's are still the most popular, but that is slowly starting to change as fewer .cons are available.

For instance, just look at how popular this site is while using a .hosting TLD.

It all depends on your site and the domain you choose. If you can use a shorter domain with a different TLD, I would say do it. (I.e. xyz.shop vs xyzonlinestore.com)

Well, it depends on what are you looking for. I like that, clever TLDs which are used as a part of a name of a company (for example 10Gbps.io - i as input, o - output). It is clearly connected with the type of business and it makes sense. Especially these creative and clever TLDs are suitable for startups.

Let's be creative and you will see that your customers will appreciate it (at the end you will differ from common TLDs as a .com, .eu, etc). On the other hand it gives more credibility if you have this "common" TLD.

I agree with previous posts, depending on type of business you will use that domain like: regional .us .ca .eu .dk .de etc. or some specific domains .space . website .webs.
You can use also .company .co .com or .solutions .deals .services for top lists you can use .top for directory .directory .news .
Or for some other niches .club .party .news .name .mobi .guru .ninja .family
Only your imagination can be barrier.

It all depends on the type of service they have like for web related they could use .com or for media/entertainment there are further different type of domain extensions.

Since most .COM/.NET Exact match domains are taken, I buy exact match .ORG domains. They rank very well in Bing without any major backlinking efforts.
I think that most of users use google rather then Bing, yahoo and others search engines and that all SEO is oriented and depend on Google.
If you have good ranking on Bing it is nothing (that is from my experience) if your rank on G is low.

Isn´t that a little black hat technique? At least it´s something gray.
I don't know if same name different domain extension is black or gray SEO, but misspell definitely is. Lot of affiliate marketers use that technique to have lot of traffic, but for legitimate business and website domain name has to be unique and can be brand name.

I would personally suggest going for whatever you think is best for your company. As you have seen, I would probably say that 99% of the time a site is popular due to the hard work it has been put into and not because of the extension they bought. A domain name might make it a little bit easier or not to spread the word faster, but it is not the determining factor.

I see that many tech starups usually choose .io for their name. It stands for in/out, input/output or many other meaning.
I don't think it is a good idea just because it stand for input/output or something else. I would pick .com if possible because its an popular domain name extension.

.com would be good domain extension.
What reasons you consider it as a good domain extension?

We havent seen a time like this since the 90s. Back then you could buy sears.com and sell it for 20k profit the next day. Today you can again. Consider maybelline.ny or aflack.insurance. Of course thats a slightly different perspective though.

.com is the most popular, you should go with that if you plan to operate in multiple countries. Don't force it just to get a .com, you should stick to bacis rules also (as short a possible, brandable, understandable)

If you plan on operating only locally, you can use the country's specific TLD.

.org only for organizations

Other extensions may work depending on targeted audience and niche.

.com would be the first priority but in case you are unable to get a .com try local extension which represent your business or niche.

I always recommend not setting up a brand unless you can get the .com and ccTLD for primary visitors. Once you have those then either use .com or ccTLD and redirect the other to the other one or you can use a new TLD e.g., .hosting but if you do that and use it as the primary domain then redirect the .com and the ccTLD to the new TLD e.g., .hosting

That way you will not lose traffic/sales from competitors sites.

You should try for a .com but to be honest just because you cannot land a .com doesn't mean anything. When it comes to domain names these days, the older everything gets the more harder it's going to be able to land that unique name - the name that nobody has ever registered. Don't let a domain extension push you away from what you are trying to achieve, I've seen plenty of fortune 100 companies run with just an .net or .org extension.

It's your brand, its your name. Market it the way you want!

In most cases a .com or a .net domain would be the best choice. Though it can be hard to find a good .com or .net domain that is available.

Another option would be to use one of the new domain extensions if you can find a good and relevant one like this site is using.

Since said that you might be using it as business for building websites you might think about using a .site or .website domain extension since they would be relevant to a website building business.
