Can someone please tell me whats the difference between VPS and VM? Does software detects each VM as a separate computer and VPS as 1 instance in VM? I could not clarify the differences when reading these terms in web hosting field.

Thanks!

Hi Kaz,

VPS - Virtual Private Server
VM - Virtual Machine

I think your looking into this question to much. They are both terms for virtual servers.

Does software detects each VM as a separate computer and VPS as 1 instance in VM?
The software that powers the Virtual Machine/Virtual Servers does detect each virtual container as it's own server.
Hope this helps, your a little vague in what your asking.

I believe LJS host has given a proper explanation about the difference ... and I hope you must have your query cleared now.

Both are virtual machines. It´s just a matter of terms usage. People commonly uses Virtual Machine for a machine running in it´s own computer with software like VirtualBox and Virtual Private Server as a Virtual Machine provided by a hosting service.

VPS and VM are the same thing. Technically you call it a VM or a Virtual Machine and in commercial terms, you call it a VPS or a Virtual Private Server. Many providers also use the term "Cloud" for VPS as it is more marketable.

different terminologies for the same technology, you will hear VPS a lot in the hosting field or even VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) but you will hardly hear it in any organization/professional environment, in those places, you will hear mostly VM (Virtual machine)...

There is difference on the virtualisation technology. Software virtualisation or "hardware" hypervisor type. The calling of hardware resources is different.

Technically VM more compatible with software than VPS. Some VPS provider using kernel routed node like openvz, virtuozzo. VM is more on xen, vmware, KVM.
