I used DO but not AWS, DigitalOcean has many good hosting features if you want to start a decent VPS hosting package. Can anyone share some comparison in terms of ecosystem, scalability, ease of setup, pricing between DigitalOcean and AWS? I want to know more services of AWS.

Amazon is a scalable cloud technology with SSDs disks running same goes with digital ocean however when it comes to pricing for an instance on both of the cloud platform Digital ocean is cheaper as compare to AWS ... AWS and digital ocean both have nice user interface as well as API . Digital Ocean simplifies pricing by bulking it all together, but if you need additional storage, or extra ram you need to snapshot and restore to a larger instance. Which means even if your application uses 5GB of storage and 1GB of ram, you're paying for 30GB of storage.

But when you got larger instance like 4 Gb RAM and 300 GB of disk space then Amazond is preferred due to its scalability on large level and pricse wise. so you need to analyse your application requirements and then choose for the right cloud hosting provider.

I agree. Also, AWS pricing structure and variety of products is confusing. DO is quite clear on their pricing and products.

I have heard a lot of horror stories from former AWS customers regarding their pricing. If your not careful, you could get a $40 bill this month, then a $1,000 bill next month if a post goes viral!

That sounds scary! We have just recently started using DigitalOcean for a project and I have to say I love their control panel. Their write/read speeds are also great for backups and things like storage with their new storage droplets. Will report back in a few months how well it performs.

I just can't understand why anyone would use AWS unless you have a boat load of money to shell out on their highest level support plan or whatever it is. Their support times have been very mediocre and in general, their setup is confusing for the average user.

Most of those "Premier" compute clouds charge additional fees for traffic and for everything which is not include into the service plan. I mean that they incur fees automatically, which is probably correct as people agreed wit their terms of service. I'd suggest everyone to go for Cloud services which are powered by any from of clustered infrastructure that offer something more than scalability and flexibility. Does two are important but don't worth high prices that may "Clouds" like charging.

I would prefer DO over Aws because for normal websites which has 10k to 20k traffic DO is best and affordable.

AWS and DigitalOcean cannot be compared as their architectures are totally different. AWS can at the best be compared to Azure and Google Compute. DigitalOcean is more like Linode. However, Amazon has now come up with another product named Amazonlightsail. If you want to compare, compare DO with Amazonlightsail.

AWS is for scalable systems. If you aren't familiar with how to setup infrastructure, then you would be better off with DO.

While DO has the more traditional VPS server packages with space, bandwidth etc bundled together, AWS brought in the exact same matching service a few weeks ago called Amazon Lightsail.

AWS is basically a whole Datacenter at your disposal. Like what they say, with great power comes great responsibility and if you do not set them up correctly and ensure you don't have leakage, you might get a larger bill than expected. However, this isn't a surprise as the invoice is prorated and you can see your charge every single day and its a joke when people complain about this because unlike any other company you actually get you see your exact bill up to date day by day everyday and the predicted month end bill instead of getting a surprise at the end of the month.

DO has limitations when it comes to scaling as you are still stuck with the traditional VPS architecture and adding more disk, bandwidth or upgrading systems is not as easy as on AWS.

DO can get expensive for larger networks because you end up paying for a fixed/bundled resource than pay per use.

In AWS you are billed for each item on a hourly pro-rata basis everyday, no monthly minimum charges nonsense. So if you add 30GB and use it only for 2 days, you are charged only for those 2 days for the 30GB, essentially you pay the price of 2 GB per month.

As mentioned before, AWS is a Datacenter at your disposal and the amount of services and tools available for you to monitor, firewall, logging, templating etc is unmatched by DO.

I checked amazonlightsail, its pretty expensive if compared with DigitalOcean.

It was due to the payment being over due and that put my account in minus for double the price of the original cost and I was only 2 days late on payment, the other thing is I had made a deposit of 25 dollars and they took it all.
Yeah I like paying via invoices than depositing money into account balance.

Aws is a good option but you have to use it carefully where as digital ocean price is almost fixed. So there is a minimal risk of being over priced. Apart from that both DO & AWS server is good. Though amazon recently introduces amazonlightsail which is almost fixed in price.

One of the cool things about DigitalOcean is their rich content, knowledge base that helps DevOps and Developers to resolve their day-to-day issues. On the otherwise, AWS has over 60 services with quite comprehensive documentation.

You can spin a 5$ droplet (512MB RAM) on DigitalOcean and go upto 1680$ (224GB).

AWS has wide range of pricing and most advanced configurations for VMs including GPU support and etc. AWS gives most choices:

reserving instance,
spot instance and
dedicated instance.

In Nov-2016, AWS launched a dev-centric service called, Lightsail. Lightsail gives you a simple VPS offering, prices starting from 5$.

Well, about Amazon Web Service, running a host with them is quite messy. The Infrastrature-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud solution they provide has ease of setting up but you can be untidy by using it. Though, they are the leading company in the global cloud infrastructure services market. Their current general purpose hourly cost is ranging from $0.428 USD to 0.857 per hour. It doubles the cost of Digital Ocean's droplet pricing.
