I know most people will say it is not possible, but how do you get as close to 100% as possible? how many percents of uptime is acceptable? how many downtimes in a month can we accept?
Assume good server with good host, how do you make sure you will always be online?

The only way to get 99% uptime is by using cloud or clustering technology.
Using these setups the operating system of the server can still crash but you are protected against hardware failures. I would expect 99% uptime for any good host, it's so simple now for end users to monitor their uptime. However service providers do have problems on occasion and maintenance has to be performed.

However, a single dedicated server can provide 99% uptime if it has no hardware or software problems. I've seen servers with an uptime of over 2 years without even a reboot. But it's a big chance to take if a failure happens.

how do you make sure you will always be online?
You don't until you have been with a provider for at least a month. After three months if you have experienced little or zero downtime that's a good sign.

Hello!

I agree, you need to know your provider to know if its 99% uptime. Also, you can also find web hostings that offer 99% uptime!

Cheers,

You should have excellent tech support, that will solve all your issues and control server load

Another good idea is to have multiple redundant providers going into the datacenter. A good way you can check this is by entering the web host's AS number (if you have it) or test IP into here and it will tell you who they are peering off of.

Here is an example using my home cable ISP (Bright House Networks/Charter)

having no down time as you said is not possible however you can surely decrease downtime. Now you might hear cloud is the only way to have above 99% up time etc but no, cloud will most definitely highly decrease the chances of downtime but there are a lot of non cloud servers which have 99% up time. (Cloud hosting does usually have better uptimes)

If you are a hosting provider you can start by ensuring your data center is reliable and check their history, secondly you need to know your stuff so you dont mess up on your side which could result in down time for your customers. There are a lot of other ways to decrease the chances of downtime, the above points should out line a few of it.

monthly downtime is not acceptable, to me maximum of 6 short downtime a year is max.

100% uptime is a myth. What you can get is 100% uptime excluding planned maintenance, natural disasters etc.

To minimize the chances of having a downtime you need to make sure you have all of your data backed up regularly, so when yo need to migrate to a different server you can do it as swiftly as possible.

If you run an in-house dedicated server make sure only authorized professional personal have access physically and also logically (administrative remote access) to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

Make sure you have uninterruptible power supply in case of an power outage - backup generators etc.

However if you are renting a server in an modern datacenter most of them meet all of the security conditions. There is standardized methology used to clasify the level of security data centers have. They are called Tiers - They range from Tier 1 to Tier 4.

Most of the Data centers to day are TIER 3+ meaning they have redundant capacity components, dual-powered equipments and multiple uplinks, all components are fully fault-tolerant including uplinks, storage, chillers, HVAC systems, servers etc. everything is dual-powered.

However downtime is something that will always exist, what is more important is that the server provider has a good 24x7 support so it get the job done as fast as possible and most importantly that they let you know in advance that there will be a downtime. Often the downtime is only between 10-30 minutes to make necessary hardware changes. Not a big deal if you know about it but can make you angry if they turn of your service without notice.

I am wondering why most of people said cloudhosting is 100% uptime. what technology is being used by cloud server to have this great feature?

However, a single dedicated server can provide 99% uptime if it has no hardware or software problems. I've seen servers with an uptime of over 2 years without even a reboot. But it's a big chance to take if a failure happens.
I'd like to know which will happen if we don't reboot a server for a long time? which failures could happen?
