I saw Xeon e3 and Core i3 in some dedicated hosting offers but I could not clarify which is better. From your personal opinion for a dedicated server which processor do you consider to be the most reliable?

it comes down to what you need it for mainly. For desktop/RDP use i3 as its sa desktop processor however for a server go for e3, it has more processing cores and its more powerful.

A XEON-E3 will be better, because it's a processor build for servers with all features needed. But do you need all this features ? That's the real question. A web hosting provider could not use a core-i3 on dedicated servers but for a "normal usage", if you have a good price it will be as reliable as E3.

The E3 is a better option to go for if you have the capital to get one.

The E3 is much better if you host a websites only. For other works, i3 have an integrated GPU card, sometimes it is better for gaming or other software, which GPU is needed.

The @steitieh said he saw a dedicated hosting offers, which means that the question is about servers. As anyone above said Intel Xeon E3 is a server CPU while the Core i3 is a desktop processor. Make sure that the Intel Xeon E3 is a latest generation or at least v3 generation. There are still many web hosts that offer v2 or even v1 based dedicated servers.

I will keep this in mind when choosing a new dedicated server, so Xeon E3 is always a better option.

Xeon E3 is not on the same league as an i3 despite the number. The iX counterpart to the X3 is the i7, so the i3 (IMO) does not belong in a dedicated server. Even the i5's (which are one step below the i7) is somewhat of a gamble.

An i7 and a Xeon E3 are architecturally identical with the exception of an ECC controller in the E3, and a GPU in the i7, so depending on the application you may benefit and/or need one or the other.

As far as the Desktop vs Server "class" that's non-sense. As long as you pair an i7 with good quality hardware, you can have a server that is just as reliable than any Xeon based box. It's all in the components.
