How to review a web hosting company?

I used to read reviews on websites or forums about web hosting companies and I could choose a good hosting package from that. But I am just curious, to give honest appraisals about web hosting companies, does a reviewer need to use services from all hosting companies?

Sadly most hosting review sites are full of fake reviews and affiliate links.

If your looking for honest user reviews, or to leave a review for your host, I would visit WebHostingGeeks.com

Indeed, anonymity is a powerful thing and their are those who will abuse this.
I just read an article about some US based business who got exposed for fake viewers and had to pay $78,000 in fines. But like you said many more get away with it.

As they all mentioned above, most of the review sites out there are fake to get you to sign up for a web hosting company's products/services. Every time they sign someone up, the website owner gets a commission.

Most of those reviews are written just to get you to sign up so that the website owner receives a percentage.
as RDO Servers mentioned, webhostinggeeks is a good source and also you could look at other review sites such as trustpilot and reviewcentre.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't creating fake reviews very illegal.
I really dislike people who do this, they can't compete on a level playing field so resort to shady or illegal tactics.
You are right @Luxin Host and @LJSHost on this, but it's impossible to stop this and users still are reading reviews before making their decision to buy a web hosting package.

I rarely read reviews on hosting review sites, instead I used to buy hosting packages from different companies and check for some weeks or one month, from that I can know which one is providing the best quality service and I can use for more months or years.

Actually this is a very complicated topic, there are thousands of "qualified" sites that can put your hosting company in the number one spot if you give them money, while the quality of your service is left behind.

Hosting review sites are not the same anymore, just publicity stunt.

Yet, some of the users don't have enough money or time to test the quality of several web hosting providers. While they may not be trustworthy at all, hosting review sites give possible customers a picture of how good/bad their services actually are.
