I would go with CentOS 6 is it been around longer and is a proven and stable OS. To be honest the support for many of these control panels is not great. cPanel is the market leader in control panels for good reason. I'm sure webmin and other panels work great but to be honest the license fee for cPanel is very much worth it for the price. installing cPanel turns your linux version into a "cPanel Distro" which is way more than just a simple addon control panel.

CentOS 7 has been out for two years now and is very stable, Works great, supports almost all panels and also is the latest version so will have much longer support than CentOS 6.
*CentOS 6 is still great and is not out of date yet*

I do agree with using Cpanel or Plesk. If you are going to invest in a VPS, the Cpanel or Plesk license should not be an issue and it will be worth it.
