I am visiting some websites that offering VPS packages, but from their notes, my websites can get ddos attacks if I have websites on their IP addresses. If my sites get DDOS attacks, what are the best solutions to protect my VPS? can I use external services from a hosting company that not host my sites?

Your suggestions would be helpful for me. Thanks.

Hello Torono,

The easiest way should be to buy a VPS on a good web hosting with DDoS protection. And when I said good web hosting, I mean, with a real network. Not one with limited bandwidth.

And if it's not enough, use cloudflare to protect your website. They offer free DDoS protection.

Hello Torono,

Can you please recommend me some names? What is a real network?
I am still learning managing VPS server hence these things are new to me.

BuyVM offers ddos protected IPv4 GRE tunneling that's using Voxility so it's supposed to be pretty good. Set a tunnel to your real server IP and it will mitigate the flood (up to a point of course).

Ask your VPS provider, if they can provide DDOS protection to you.

Ask your provider to provide it free of cost and they will do it. or use cisco or similar product for ddos protection they have a software designed for it. or you can simply use your VPS control panels firewall or of course use cloudflare for the same

I would recommend making the websites which you host on the VPS go through Cloudflare and that's a perfect solution for you a while. If the ones who attack you know the IP address of the VPS, then ask you VPS hosting company to give you a new IP address because you want to stay away from attackers. Once you get a new IP address, the ones who are attacking you won't know the IP address of your VPS, and it will take them a while to find out your new IP address.

At the same time, as soon as you get the new IP address, open a free account with Cloudflare and make all your websites go through Cloudflare. This will involve updates on your domain's DNS records, so as your public records and IP address will become Cloudflare's DNS records and IP address. So when the hackers attack you next time, they will direct their DDOS attack to the Cloudflare's IP address, and Cloudflare will handle that for you perfectly. In this way, the attackers will never find out the real IP address of your websites (and VPS server), and Cloudflare will face and solve the DDOS attacks for you.

Please note that Cloudflare has a free plan, and you don't necessarily have to pay them money for the protection that I wrote you above. Also, I am bringing Cloudflare as an example, so as I have been using them for the same exact purpose and a few others for several months, and I really like them. Anyway, I would encourage you to look for other similar companies as options, so as there are many on the market nowadays.

DDOS protection can be achieved by both internal and external assistance. As stated above try to get a "clean"ipv address . What I recommend is building a firewall table on your vps , you can use popular software like ConfigServer Security & Firewall or others. Ask your provide if they provide both physical and software protection and demand an upgrade if they don't. Also you can use cloudflare as state above , as looking mirror your vps.

Many of the hosts provide cloudflare ddos protection, a strong barrier against ddos attacks. make sure to choose the host providing rock solid security to your site.

I would suggest below points for protecting VPS from DDOS attack -

1. Block the IP addresses from where you are getting high traffic. You can check the locations of IP addresses, if they are from suspicious country which are well know for hacking then you can block the IPs.

2. You should performed the server hardening while setting up your VPS. This process will include setting up various boundaries for server so no one can easily breaks your server security.

3. You should monitor the traffic on your server in regular basis. Because DDOS used to raise the traffic on your server. It will alert that there is suspicious activity going on.

4. Make sure the devices which are connected to your VPS are getting authenticated before connecting to your server. Set the stronger password for them so DDOS attack will be prevented from those devices.

5. Select the required bandwidth for your server. If you will assign the required bandwidth and there is great spike on bandwidth usage then it will be DDOS attack in many situations. So keep your eye on bandwidth of your VPS.

6. Always make sure the applications which you've installed are getting patched when there is new update available.

7. Enable the proxy protection so it will apply the extra security which will keep safe our server from threats. It will hide your real IP address from the hacker.

Hi Torono,
Prevention is better than cure. The best practice I think you should adopt is to get your VPS from a website that is DDOS protected with great bandwidth so that in the future you wouldn't get yourself into any mess you can't handle.Do your research on good VPS from reputable people, there are many fantastic ones around.
Get a DDOS protector like CloudFlare for your site, even today many auto redirecting bots are being created on a daily basis.
