I was thinking about getting a dedicated server from OVH but I don't know to much about how you would operate one. I have experience in setting up a VPS on Linode and vultr, I just select my OS in their control panel and connect via SSH by putty and do my configurations. Is it the same with dedicated servers?

Essentially, yes.

From a software/server management standpoint, there is pretty much no difference between being on a VPS and being on a dedicated server.

I read that it is required to pay fee for setting a dedicated server if you need a managed hosting service

For example, install Ubuntu server

Does a VPS need this?

With OVH, you can install and reinstall your server like a VPS. And after you can login via SSH. And with the hosting series, Plesk license for 30 domains is free. But if you buy a dedicated, you should install a virtualization system, because if you want to migrate after it will be easier, and it also a good way to make backup.
I have PM you about that because I'm also want to upgrade my current dedicated but good servers are always expensive.

What is a virtualization system? do I need to pay for this?

I have not ever used a dedicated before, just go for VPS and I think it can apply all my requirements for my websites at this time

A virtualization system is a software to create and manage your virtual machines. VMware vSphere and Proxmox VE are the most popular software, and you can use it for free.

With a dedicated server, you can create your own VPS with dedicated resources. More performance and more safe as you can easily backup your VM.

1. Most OVH dedicated servers are just a CLOUD SERVER with Dedicated price tag.

2. A dedicated server is not similar setup as VPS

Control panels are diff, Use of the containers are diff, network use also diff. many things you can do on a Dedi which not possible on VPS.

I don't know what the use of your dedi but if it's not just running a blog then you will see the diff ... soon! ;)

I like dedicated servers better then VPS. In my opinion, they're more options then a VPS, honestly, its up to you.

Do you like VPS or dedicated servers?

It's easy to see if it's a dedicated. Just to look if you can install VMware, Proxmox or SolusVM. If yes it's a dedicated :)

2. A dedicated server is not similar setup as VPS

Control panels are diff, Use of the containers are diff, network use also diff. many things you can do on a Dedi which not possible on VPS.
The only things you can't done with a VPS is to host VPS on it. But for network, containers or similar, VPS is cheaper than dedicated (not always true ^^) and you can install and reinstall it quickly or bought 3 and setup a load balancing.
If dedicated is more powerful and offer many options, it's also a good way to loose all your data if it's not properly setup or if it fail.

Hello,

I have a question also, don't VPS have more restrictions then a dedi?

Cheers,

No it should not. You can add IP and run any application.

And when I said you can't host a virtual machine on a VPS, it's not really true, as some visualization systems like VMware can run VPS in a VPS. (#Inception)
