Had a doubt in Mind, how important is it to have captcha in web application/website.? Does captcha hurt user experience and conversions?

It annoys a lot of people.
It's also easy to get around, if someone wants to bad enough.

If you need/want to implement captcha, make sure it is not too difficult to read.

As a user, I hate them. I understand the need to prevent bots from accessing systems and creating accounts, but often they are just too difficult to read and hurt the over all user experience. Just my two cents.

Depends on if you want to spend a ton of your time deleting spam, or have the perfect user experience?

Sadly it's a necessity these days. Backlinkers use software that trolls the net for forms and comments to drop their crap. Doesn't matter if your site is popular or not, if there is a place to submit something they will do it.

Although, Google's new Recaptcha is just checking a box, so very simple and easy. Seems to be working well so far.

That is a good point, Ron. I do like Google's new Recaptcha. It's better than staring at a screen trying to figure out some cryptic script.

Unfortunately, despite poorer user experience, Captcha one of the only spam-prevention tools that work. If someone spams your site regardless of Captcha, you can rest assured know that they have probably paid money to bi-pass it (like using death by captha services and similar API calls - real people actually guess some of those for a fee of pennies after an API call, a multi-million dollar industry now).

I am a big fan of using progressive frames for forms now, like Bootstrap's Modal framework. And then organizing the form(s) into steps. For instance: Name & Email | User & Password | Shipping Info | Captcha

4 separate forms making the user work seem less intensive. But these days users are really, really impatient. Good luck in your creativity.

As per me...CAPTCHA is required for the human verification as it helps us to restrict the bots on the websites. Its important to avoid the fake comments/wrong attempts to the website.

Hi tarunap,
there is a great security plugin that you should check out if you have a WordPress site. It's called WP Site Guardian.

The video will open your eyes as to how easy it is for nasty pasties to get in and make a mess.

The worst ones will be sending their spam from your domain and can get you in some trouble too.

I've had sites hacked that just had to be rebuilt from scratch because of these low life creatures.

Hacking is rife, and you need to protect your sites as best you can.

I do hate the captures too, and I can see by my email subscribes, and not confirmed entries that plenty of users don't like them either.

I still use confirmed opt ins though for my email subscriptions as it is so easy for any subscriber to give you pain if they choose to.

I just find it hard to understand why someone who has subscribed to a list can get upset if you send them emails. Crazy but true.

Anyway, protect your self and live with the reduced opt ins, and know your email list costs will be reduced.

Most users that have a problem with confirming are very likely to have a problem with taking action too, so I just don't worry about them.

Take good care of those that do opt in, and you will do fine.

cheers, Mal.

well without capche you can't consider internet for Real user, if there would be no capache there would be noi real time user and space will be filled with bots and programs will operate your Facebook account. Capache is only meant to verify if user is a real man or a code.

Captchas can take up extensive CPU resources (that is, slow down your web server) or require features not present on your website

I used to hate captchas until Google launched its new reCaptcha, where all you have to do is put a tick, confirming you're not a robot. Damn, those old captchas were such a hassle, glad we have an easy alternative today. Also, Google reCaptcha is easy to handle, even a newcomer can install it by simply following the guides.

I would say that the old google captcha is so annoying that I hate to see it in any form. but the new google captcha is way much better. the picture concept is good and people enjoyed while matching them like choosing car boxes and street signs etc.

New Google's reCAPTCHA is great. It offers two options - reCAPTCHA v2 and invisible reCAPTCHA. Google says:

"Invisible reCAPTCHA will use advanced risk analysis technology to separate humans from bots: no need for us to click on anything at all (or to select images associated with a clue image, as mobile users have been doing). The new Invisible reCAPTCHA will mean that Google's submerging its bot/human detection technology completely. Bots presumably won't be able to game the system by doing what those researchers did: to (ironically enough!) use Google image search to come up with a list of words associated with given images and thus automate the click-all-the-kitties tests."

If you don't wish to have multiple bots to surf your website and sometime they can be harmful to the website, captcha is the solution even though it annoys quite a lot of people.
So what I do is that I block all known ASNs that contains bots and let them do a captcha that's way more better imo

A balance between security & user experience is required to be maintained. Captcha prevents spam on your website which ultimately improves browsing speed & user experience. At other point difficult captca annoy every user. In my opinion recaptcha is better with "I am not a robot".
Keep your captcha simple which gives you optimum result on your website.

It has both advantages & disadvantages. If I turn off My Captcha on WHMCS, it gets flooded with Spammers who open spam support tickets. Other than this, I feel annoyed when I have to fill a captcha ! So, think accordingly.

Yes, captchas predicts feasible human interaction (most of the times, though, because there are captcha solving bots that are capable of handling them). Moreover, with intelligent captchas it is possible to have more human interaction than the normal ones. But be aware not many people like to solve captchas just for logging into their accounts or even registering with a new one. They may hamper user interaction and certainly many people get tired to solve them every time if there's too much of them. So do it but on your own expense. And never overdo it in any case.

Many people are annoyed with captchas but many of them have to solve the captcha to reach their favorite website/app. I think captchas are used to prevent the users who want to access the website/app with a bot and this way prevents them from doing that. if you think bots will hurt your website or web application, you can forget using captcha. but if it doesn't hurt, just try it. just keep in mind that you use captcha that is easy for users to solve.
