There are 3 main options for web hosting.

Shared Hosting - You get an account on a server, with an alloted amount for space and bandwidth. You can upload your files via ftp and manage your account with their control panel. All account on the server share the same CPU and RAM resources.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) - This is a virtual server, on a physical server. You get alloted a certain amount of space, bandwidth, RAM, CPU, etc depending on the plan you choose. You have full ssh/RDP access to the server and can install/configure virtually anything you want.

Dedicated server - The entire physical server is yours to use as you with. The only limitations are what physical resources (hardware) the server has.

A VPS and Dedicated server can give you a lot more power, performance, and security. However you also have to be able to install, configure, and manage the server. Most hosts provided VPS's and Dedicated servers as "unmanaged" (you handle all of the install/configuration yourself) and "managed" (their support staff will do this for you.

Shared Hosting:
Shared hosting is a hosting service where many users share a single server. All the users have a separate directory where they can upload their files. This is generally most economical option as all the users share the overall cost of the server. The server is administered by the hosting provider and the technical tasks like managing servers, installing server software, security updates, technical support, etc. are the responsibility of the server admin. These servers generally use control panels like cPanel, Directadmin, Plesk, Interworx, etc which allow the users to manage their websites.

Dedicated Hosting:
Dedicated server is a service where the user leases the entire physical server and is not shared by anyone else. Unlike VPS and Shared hosting the user has full control over the server. The user can choose the hardware, software, OS, etc. Dedicated server is useful because of the benefits like high performance, security, email stability and control. This option is the costliest as you are the only one who is bearing the cost of the entire server. Most of the providers offer Managed dedicated server where the server is managed by the provider up to some extent.

With shared web hosting service, many websites are on one server, connected to the internet. I've read somewhere a great comparison of shared hosting to living in an apartment complex, as all residents live on one location and use those resources that are available to them. Having a dedicated server is like owning a house, on the other hand. Here, you don't share your resources with anyone. It comes down to how much money you are willing to pay.

That's awesome that my descriptions are being quoted.

Look at Shared Hosting as if you are renting a room within an apartment inside of a building, while sharing the costs of the utilities with everyone else that lives inside of the building. When it comes to a VPS, think as yourself as renting an apartment within the building giving you the flexibility to rent out the rooms. You also need to consider however that some of the other apartment renters in the building might be subletting their units pretty heavily, so much so that in the end there may be more people living throughout that building than there are in the shared one....

When it comes down to having a Dedicated Server, obviously you have control of the entire building!

Hey,

Shared hosting, also known as shared services or virtual hosting, is a hosting service in which the service provider serves pages for multiple websites and each one has its own domain name, from a single web server. There are many types of hosting services, but shared hosting is less expensive as compared to other types of hosting services and one of the best way for business to create a web presence. however, it is not ideal for websites with high traffic.

Dedicated server is a web hosting service, in which the client leases the entire physical server. Unlike shared server, the client has full control on the server. This type of hosting service offer benefits such as security, high performance, control, and email stability. It is an ideal service for sites that receive high traffic.
