I am checking a VPS package but when choosing an OS for it then I am getting confused. I want to know which OS will make my sites run smooth on VPS? Centos or Ubuntu or Debian?

What are advantages of Centos or Ubuntu or Debian?

Personally my opinion is that Ubuntu is a Desktop-Orientated Linux Distribution made Server Capable; Ubuntu is actually based off of Debian.
It boils down to personal preference... Which one do you feel that you have more experience in managing/maintaining.
The other would be, are you using a control panel, as cPanel is only compatible with CentOS.

I would go on to google and search how to manage a server with either operating system, and learn how to use said operating system via. Command Line as that is how you will be managing your server/VPS. From there, choose which one you believe will best suit you.

Unless you are willing to take the time how to fully understand how linux works, functions and is managed via command console, I recommend going with a MANAGED VPS with cPanel on it and CentOS. There are a lot of factors to consider when wanting to make your website run smooth, and unless done correctly you may end up with disaster.

E.T. is correct in saying that if you don't know what you are doing go with managed. When I upgraded from shared to vps, I went with managed while I was doing the learning curve, however I did spend 5 years learning linux at home. I learned on ubuntu, and it is different than learning on centos, and different than learning about a hosting environment, that is completely different.

Even as someone that knows a good amount with how linux works, I still go with managed to relieve the stress of worrying about things. For example, if you need a server audit, and have no idea how to deal with that, that will be included in your managed hosting fee, regardless of how much time is required. If you went with unmanaged and needed an audit, you could pay several hundred dollars up to a thousand or more.

Just when you think you know something with managing a server, you find out you need to learn more. Managed hosting can be a savior when you have a hardware failure, or your VPS just goes for a crap on you, or your VPS node gets overloaded.

Important considerations to make with a VPS, you are responsible for backing up all the content. Your webhost may make a weekly snapshot, but that could cost you to get that snapshot activated. Always check out the VPS provider you intend to use, ask questions, get information..

As mentioned above, using CentOS will makes things easier for you in the long run, but it is completely up to you and what OS is comparable with what you want to run on the server.

The majority of the web servers on the internet run CentOS. Because of this, there is a much larger userbase, easier to find tutorials, help in forums, etc.

Getting a manages VPS is a good way to make your life easier as you will have someone else to handle the setup/management of your server. However, if you have the time, energy, and desire, why not give it a shot. Knowledge is power, and the more you can learn by doing, the better off you are in the long run!

I agree with this, I searched around search engines and found more articles related to CentOS. However it is just for CentOS 6 and I fell difficult when finding tutorials or software that compatible with Centos 7.

There are tons of tutorials for Cent 7 and unless you're using some software that isn't maintained regularly most of what you want will be compatible with Cent 7. Honestly, if it isn't compatible that probably means it isn't maintained and therefore you probably don't want to use that software.

This is another general question. If you don;t ask the right ones, you'd not get the right response. What do you actually want to achieve? What are you going to do on this VPS? If you are about to host websites, you'd simply use CentOS version 7 and done't waste your time asking about Ubuntu or Debian. CentOS is better adapted for web hosting and most control panels work on it. Ubuntu or Debian are as good as they are, but you'd better use them for different purposes, not for hosting websites.

Centos - For more advanced administrators, less common
Debian - For less advanced administrators, it is more common than CentOS
Ubuntu - The lowest entry threshold, the most popular than the above OS

Choose. For the beginner, the best option is Ubuntu.

The biggest difference between the two Linux distributions is that Ubuntu is based on the Debian architecture while CentOS is forked from Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In Ubuntu, you can download DEB packages using the apt-get package manager. ... CentOS is considered to be a more stable distribution compared to Ubuntu

It was maybe true by the past, but a large part of cloud infrastructure is running on Ubuntu with OpenStack and there is no stability issues.
Additionnaly Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be supported for 10 years, and come with Canonical Livepatch to upgrade kernel without reboot (free for 3 servers).

So for any other usage than running WHM/cPanel, Ubuntu is a stable alternative with much more new features (snap, kubernetes, LXC, LXD, Docker) and with the latest packages available from PPA repositories (Apache 2.4, Nginx 1.15, MariaDB 10.3, PHP7.3, Redis 5.0).

Well I think the performance of the site doesnt not matter only on the OS but the technology used to storage for example if its regular HD or SSD.
Also the webserver type and and its configuration its very important
The language of the code (plain html or php) if php the php handler selection and correct configuration is important
The design its important too, sites with too many css/img/js cant run fast
The internet access for the server provider is important
The internet access for the users is also important

My recommendation if you are not a skilled linux person is to get a VPS with CentOS from a trusted source and install a control panel like plesk its very easy to use and have well tuned webserver... faster than the default from cPanel

if you need assistance choosing a VPS let me know.

Debian - Very stable and good for that there is not any extra installed default. Bad this is if need newer packades you may not find.
Ubuntu - Similar as Debian, but lot of extra installed default and packades are newer.
CentOS - More redhat base system.

Itself i like Debian in server's if possible, or ubuntu also good choice but need remove lot of packades on default installations.
