What was the main purpose of making your site?

When I first started dipping my toes into internet marketing, the very first site I created was intended just to make money.

Since then I have created numerous websites, mostly to try to make money with, and a handful of other sites that I just did for the love of doing it.

I created a website so that I can share my idea with whatever topic that comes into my mind. I love writing, I just don't want to keep everything that I know on my own, just simply wanted to share it.

To share my IT knowledge with other administrators around the world. Course would be nice to make some $$$ to cover the hosting. But money isn't the main focus, experience has shown me the websites created for the fun of it usually end up making more money than the ones purely setup to make money...

I have a few current projects. One is an online internet radio broadcasting company where my main purpose--or focus-- is to promote independent bands and musicians. Another project is a Promotion Forum, which is doing extremely well with 69 users and almost 5000 posts in under two months and barely open to the public for that long. My third project is a technology-ish blog where I personally review websites, forums, and blogs for a fee (yet to be determined as I'm doing free reviews to build content), and other articles will include technology related, media related, and gadget related reviews as well as website tips & tricks. All of the projects have been a lot of fun up to this point.

My blog is about Public Transport. There are very few blogs or websites in India that are dedicated to Public transport so I decided to start. The name came because I was going to initially dedicate it to Buses in Mumbai.

I have several different sites and there are some different reasons for certain ones that differ from others.

I have sites that help website and blog owners with good articles, information and resources. I have a personal website/blog that I just write articles/posts that share different things that are either on my mind, in the news, or are something I have come across. I have some informational and tech related websites, as well as some others.

Out of all of them my personal site gets the least amount of attention and work. It wasn't really created for anything other than just to have a personal site that I can write, share or whatever different things without being tied to a particular niche.

I am always building up new ones as I see a need or because I want to get involved in something. I always have a few going through the build and design stages and I am always busy because of it. Another main reason I create my sites is to see them grow and what they can achieve.

So I have many different reasons, but one part of why each one was created is because I enjoy building them.

This is up to each of you. There are two types:
- No purpose to make money: Make blog / web to share life experiences, write diary ...
- Purpose of earning potential: Making web / blog to introduce products, services, advertising, sales ...

My first websites (back in 1997) was related with services.
Many plumbers, electricians, builders, painters, and different companies didn't had the money to build a website and didn't know that was important (at that time).
So i have made a deal with them: i build the site, i create the virtual brand - since many of them have horrible logos designed in Word -, i create the content, texts, etc.. and if a client request the service we agree a %.
Well, i have to say that many of this "partnerships" are still live until today, and we have made many others. Basically We receive the call from the client/visitor of the website, we made all the necessary questions depending of the service, and when we contact the company/professional everything is already prepared (location, adress, problem that the professional will face, etc...).
And you know what? Many of this guys don't want, and don't have the time to be checking internet, etc... so we make that job, get our % and it's a real win-win situation. :)

The first websites I built them because I like owning website for myself but when they were growing and I could earn money from then then I now am building websites for business purposes. You can not maintain more websites at a same time if you don't have revenue from them.
Let consider you have to pay hosting fees, content, domain names, marketing, and much more, then you will know why you need your websites earn money for you.

What sorts of things do you write about and what inspires you? I find that, at my blog, I try to take normal and mundane every day events and explore their deeper connotations and implications. This really forces me to be creative and to have a precise analytical approach to myself and to how I view my reality.

To tell you the truth, I first started with blogs. Then eventually when I felt that I have more blog posts that could be well integrated into a whole website, then I chose to make a website out of them. It was slow at the beginning. I didn't know what I was doing because I was a complete novice in the field. Later when I gained some knowledge and applied them so I could earn some money from doing what I loved to do. I wanted to educate the masses on certain issues, such as women issues, poetry and creative writing and the like. I just loved my work more than the earning itself. Of course the earnings well-motivated me to work more diligently. But the main purpose remains the same even now.

I recently created a blog at the behest of many of my friends and co-workers because they encouraged me to start recording, at the blog, my creative writing pieces and commentaries on culture. Because of them, I had some initial traffic, but I was in novice in terms of ads or generating a bigger following. I've been learning as I have been going along, and I am starting to see money trickle in, and it is very encouraging and exciting.

Shilpa,

I too love creative writing and poetry, and even though the market is flooded with blogs about these topics, I think that there is always room for new voices, like yours and mine, to add to the ongoing discussion about what it is to be a writer and the craft of writing and how rewarding and enriching it actually is and can be.
