SSL is important to encyrpt the communication from visitors browsers and network to your website or webserver. SSL is must and good to implement, if you deal with sensitive data and process online payments. It does offers some benefits when it comes to SEO aspect. We recommend using SSL for every website. If you deal with Credit cards, online payments then adding security headers will make it much better.

Try to implement it, if you want to protect your customer sessions.

Here is tool for guidance purpose, one can use this and improve their websites security futher, after installing SSL and other security measures.

Hope this is helpful for someone here, who is interested in security and enycryption.

Do you mean that it's important for web hosting websites or just websites in general?
I think it is for both, but better if that is a business website.

I implement ssl on my 'business' sites as it gives my clients more trust and confidence to buy from me. on blogs and other sites , non-ssl is good enough i think
Why you don't consider using it for your blogs, even if visitors browse your blog then they also need to trust your blog is secure there.

"The primary reason why SSL is used is to keep sensitive information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can understand it. This is important because the information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to. This protects it from hackers and identity thieves."

for more information you can search on google as well, and answer to your question is YES

I don't have SSL certificates on mhy website. I hear every now ansd then that I should secure my websites with SSL certificates, however, I did not know how having SSL certificates will help my website. I always thought that SSL certificate is just the https protocal and a gree lock sign. Thanks for the detail information.

An SSL Certificate encrypts the sensitive data passed between the users' browser and a website's server. It's a must-have security measure for all the online businesses that collect customers' personal information and credit card details. All the SSL Certificates issued by recognized Certificate Authorities follow strict regulations and security protocols.

In 2014 Google started giving a ranking boost to secure HTTPS/SSL websites. This move raised the popularity of SSL among small websites and bloggers. Nowadays even a basic website that doesn't collect sensitive details employs an SSL Certificate as an essential element of their SEO strategy.

Poodle SSL Security Threat Explored

Poodle is a breed of dog with legs that resembles cotton candies. It is intelligent and a regular staple at dog shows. Even the most friendly dogs have the propensity to bite. Now we see all kinds of security alerts and snafus likes heartbleed and shell shock!!! The latest in addition is POODLE.

All of this started when a team in google developed and tested an attack named POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) which uncovered vulnerability in Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) version 3 protocol or in short SSLv3.

SSLv3 is an obsolete but still used encryption in both older and new web browsers. (It is an 18-year-old protocol which was replaced by the TLS protocol)

POODLE tries to force the connection between your web browser and the server to downgrade to SSLv3. The POODLE attack takes advantage of the protocol version negotiation feature built into SSL/TLS to force the use of SSL 3.0 and then uses this new vulnerability to decrypt select content within the SSL session. The decryption is done byte by byte and will generate large number of connections between the client and server.

SSL makes sure that when you send data over the internet, it does not come as myusername and mypassword, it comes as *&WQ^E*^SAD and AS*&D^*WAE^ which will be deencrypted on the other end.

This is very important for sites with valueble information.

As previously mentioned, it creates trust from visitors, so it is almost certainly a must have in most cases

SSL is the backbone of the secure internet and it protects your sensitive information as it travels across the world's computer networks. And it is essential for protecting your website, even if it doesn't handle sensitive information like credit cards. It provides privacy, critical security and data integrity for both your websites and your users personal information.

SSL certificate adds the security to your all data over the internet. It will provide the data integrity. Also, it secures your details like the credit card or other sensitive information. When you are using any payment gateway like PayPal then it's compulsory to have the SSL installed on your website.

Sites having SSL installed on it have the more traffic, compare to the non-SSL sites. When end users see the green padlock while accessing your website on top left corner of the web-browser then it indicated him that it's trusted site. If there is no SSL then any computer connected to your server can see the username, password and other credentials on your site. When there is SSL installed on your website that time data on your website will be sent in encrypted format on internet so no can hack it.

So it's always recommended to have SSL on you domain.

One thing for sure SSL will not generate more traffic... If you are collecting personal information such as address, credit card details etc. then it matters such as ecommerce sites on payment related pages ONLY... Otherwise there is absolutely no need for it... It is not a major ranking factor and as mentioned it is only applicable in certain scenarios relating to sensitive data capture...
Hello..
According to the new Google algorithm. SSL is a must already Google has set the time frame. If you don't have SSL Google Will not Recognise and claw your site... But you have time. I recommend SSL it gives trust to the visitors and help your SEO score.

I have heared people saying before that the main reason they use SSL is chrome, the fact the the lock turns from green to gray bothers some people or that https gets crossed over with a red line. However this is more a case of personal satisfaction :eek:fftopic:
The cross red bar indicates Content errors.. Most of the time it's your image or links which points to http rather than https.
SSL is a must its never a personal satisfaction.

I had only a little knowledge about the having an SSL certificate for a website. I know it is used for encryption services to secure the data such as passwords, credit card and banking details through the internet. But I never know it will improve the site in the search engine results. I learned so much from this thread. Thanks for the information everyone. :)

But would a client know what SSL is? would he actually feel secured? Also which one is it? does it generate more traffic? if so, how? does it make the site more accentuate? I think a client would feel secured just be being adequate. Maybe the variety on the site. SSL needs more interpretation in my opinion.

All modern browser, and especially chrome display a green padlock if your connection to a website is done under SSL/TLS.
It will have more and more impact on website ranking, and it also provide a huge bonus for website performance with HTTP/2.
About security, it will require to explain to a client the difference between an encrypted connection and website security, and that's not an easy part.

Thanks. Like I said the client would get into a implementation about the whole encrypted connection, he may not even find variance. He might even intertwine them together. Again thanks for your reply, I didn't know this could effect your website ranking.

Basically SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is utilized to secure the information transmitted over the web between your PC and the servers. This could be the password you used to sign into any social media or your credit / debit card when you are obtaining something on the web, fundamentally any essential data you wouldn't need others to know.

With an SSL certificate, any data that is transmitted toward becoming encrypted by inserting arbitrary characters into the original message making it indiscernible to everybody except from the proposed server. This makes it about impossible for hackers to steal your data.

It encrypts the data sent and received by the user. Some SSL are standard and some are premium to protect you from virus and malwares.

There is literally no downside to having SSL and it's free with Let's Encrypt so there really is no reason not to have it.
Aside from the advantages well described above the only difference is that your visitors connect to your website via a different Port.

What I only know is that if you are selling something and have online payment option- you need to have SSL.

IT protect your submitted data by the user by encrypting. Its very important if you have any important data that should not be leaked.
