Have anyone here been in web hosting business more than 5 years, I recommended some web hosts to my colleges but some said that they only go with a web hosting company if they have acted in this field 5+ years, is it necessary to choose a web hosting company with good history or go with a new one which offering good offers? any thoughts?

You will not know what your service will like until you stat using it, regardless of if the provider is new or old. You should not judge any service by how long the provider has been around.

But I do agree our business is full of get rich quick merchants and kiddie hosts who think being a service provider is simple as buying a server without any understanding or experience with the technology and care little for customer service and only the revenue which is often reflected in the service, these so called operations hurt us all in the eyes of potential customers.

I would say don't judge a book by it's cover or release date, instead sample it for yourself for a short while. It's the only way you can recommend anything with confidence.

I dont 100% agree however I can see where you college is coming from. Alot of new hosts are not stable and not have figured out how to run their business.

I think hosting businesses who have been around for a year are stable enough and it is also important to check their position on the market, their growth and reviews. While positive reviews can be faked, removing negative reviews is very hard so if there has been trouble with the hosting provider you will find out about it.

I can second this. I am willing to admit my mistakes. As passionate as I was when I got into this industry 4 years ago, I didn't know what I was doing. I started my first hosting company without a business plan, goals, or stable business model. Unfortunately a large percentage of new businesses are starting this way as it has gotten far easier and cheaper to do so.

I am not a web hosting provider but I would not care on this if I did.
I can choose a provider has been working on this field for 2+ years, it is enough to have a quality service, that's also depends on what they will provide you and how they supported, not depends on how long they have been in this industry.

We started in 2009. Not as old as some, older then many.

I would not recommend a hosting company that is less then 1-2 years old due to the turn over rate in this industry.

However, there are plenty of companies that have been around for more then 5 years, that I would never recommend.

I'm in the business for 4 years now. But when choosing hosting for my other projects I also check the domain age, should be at least 2 years for me. But then again...reviews, reviews.... for sure you need to check them. There are a lot of crappy companies around

I've been in the industry for over 15 years. There are pros and cons for using both an established larger company vs using a smaller lesser known provider. Sometimes using a smaller company is going to work out better for you because they are working hard to earn and KEEP your business whereas with other larger companies they may not necessarily care as much if you were to decide to leave and purchase services elsewhere. Smaller usually means more personable. On the flip side there are plenty of unknown providers that pop up every day who have no business within the industry or they are straight up scammers looking for a quick payday before they deadpool and disappear, which is why many people may avoid an unknown/new provider, which is unfortunate because there are plenty of small companies out there run by very intelligent individuals who provide great services.

I've been in the industry for about 2 years now, but my first successful host was only invented about 6 months ago.

Although you shouldn't trust brand new hosts, waiting 5 years before saying it's safe is ridiculous. Some companies have been around for decades and turned around and said 'we are closing in 2 weeks', they are no safer than new hosts.

General rule of thumb for new hosts, wait a few months, test the services and befriend the staff and see how it goes. If it goes well, they'll keep getting money from you, and hopefully be alive for as long as your a customer, as your paying for their bills at the end of the day, or at least part of them.

Well I started approx 9 years back in April 2008 I guess. Well to be honest I used to think that when my 10 years will be gone I will be rich because I used to see web hosting companies which were 10 years old were earning millions, but in reality if you dont work very hard you lag behind.

Now as mentioned year don't matter, the thing which matter is background of founders, if the founders are professional and are here for doing real job than 3 months old host is better than 15 years old host.

Another thumb rule always make backup, never trust host they will always ditch you how big they are, you are the only one who care about yourself more than any host, so keep in mind that your own backups will save you.

My current business is 3 years old. I'm not the oldest but I have been around and seen a lot happen.

I do have hosting business roots that go back to 2006 - 2008.

Been in the industry pretty much since before it even was an industry.
I remember dialing up on a 9600 baud modem to upload files!

Started in 2001 with a Pentium 3 800Mhz and a whopping 512mb of memory. The industry has changed a tiny bit.
