How many accounts do you put on one server?

Say a basic server with these specs:

Xeon 1240vx
16GB RAM
1TB Hard Drive
GB Network port

WHM/cPanel

How many accounts would you load up on a server like this. I realize hard drive space would be a factor at some point.

Most of or shared hosting servers are E3-1275v3's with 32Gb of RAM, so rather similar to what you mentioned.

We have a absolutely limit of 200 customers/server, but some get capped before reaching that density.

It all depends on the load.

Customers do not create a load on the server, websites do. Therefore a server configuration cannot handle a set number of resources, it depends on how many resources your customers use.

What you allow in your hosting plans will make some difference, but really it just comes down to the traffic your customers sites receive, and how well their sites are programmed.

I would say 200 accounts max, but from my experience, 200 accounts are not possible.
Depends on customers' site traffic. Also, we found, customers are using their own scripts to backup database, website and upload to 3rd party FTP or cloud service. Which is putting an extra CPU load.

As mentioned previously it really depends on server load which should be tracked all the time. You can get your server used all resources by 10,50,100... accounts. You should plan how many resources you will be allocating for account (disk space, processes, memory limit) and then calculate what would be your server capability.

After setting limit you should always check on server load and before it exceeds normal value stop creating new account on that server.

1TB drive can last a long way in a typical shared environment unless your TOS allows for huge file storage. :) Anyway to answer your question, unless you're selling expensive managed wordpress or something that guarantees RAM per user (which then limits the amount of user per server to around 40, if you're honest), my thought process goes like this. Assuming the average PHP processes consumes 64mb of ram per consumer, in an ideal world you can put 200 customers safely. But that of course also depends on what kind of separation layer between users and the limit that you set in place. 30 guys using badly written php scripts and db can and will overload your server. So, the real answer is probably just monitor your servers aggresively, find the usual suspects that overloads your server, help them optimize or send them to jail :D

The other option...as many accounts you can fit until the data center calls saying there's smoke coming from the server.

Would that smoke be because the servers are SOOOOOOO fast? :icon_rock:

Yup.

Raid X-23L (24 drives) with adamentium drives to dissipate the heat and speed. In the event a drive should fail..it will go into self-healing recovery.:drunk:

Well that seems really hard drive loaded. Well the smoke can always hint at help :p.

200 Account on a server is Quite Impossible.
Theoretically , its possible but in actual Production environment [Practically] its NOT.

Only 90-110 Clients will be possible as there are many factors which will also affect on Server performance.

Are you saying that the configuration the OP listed cannot handle 200 customers, or that "a server" cannot handle 200 customers.
Either way, please explain how you can say that with certainty.

Some customers may have 10+ sites/account.
Some will have only a single website.

Some customers will have dynamic websites with a CMS.
Some will have only static content.

Some customers will use a CDN.
Some will not.

Some customers will have a lot of traffic to their sites.
Some will only get a couple hundred hits/month.

A shared hosting server typically comprises a combination of these customers.

There is no way you can logically say a server can't hold 200 customers and still function properly.

I would agree with the above

200 max but really depends on the load of the server. The last thing you want to do is overload the server and have issues going forward. Its just not worth the hassle

With your server specs, I think your CPU or HDD will be the limiting factor.

Probably HDD First, plus with no RAID, you are really risking everything, if your HDD goes down, everything is lost..

I'd suggest at least get RAID 1 with 2 drives, better if RAID 10 with 4 drives, as you get better performance, close to a single SSD drive
