The major reason of getting hit by DDOS attack is that your competitor do not want to you to get success and they try everything to hurt you or want to put your site down.

Reasons why you would get DDoS'd, in order of likeliness:
  • Your competitors are doing it
  • Some script kiddie just learned what's DDoS and randomly found your website
  • Competitors of your hosting provider are attacking the servers/clients of that hosting provider
  • Someone found a way to find unprotected websites and just randomly attacks them

Did I miss something? Anyway, it's most likely a competitor or a script kiddie.

I would not think competitors of a hosting company would DDOS a rival, I'm sure this has happened before but it is very illegal and not smart to attack a company who understands everything about tracing an attack to it's source. I would go with the script kiddie's, with a credit card/PayPal account (often stolen) anyone can hire a bot net hourly to use as they wish.

DDOS used to require a high level technical knowledge and have the resources to carry out the attack, but these days it's easy as a few clicks.

You will never know the exact who and reasons behind the attack unless the matter goes to court.

DDOS is a fact of life in 2017 and needs to be defended against on the network level, most attacks can easily be mitigated but if someone has the money, time and strong intent all you can do is defend yourself as best as possible and try to get evidence about the attacker.

Most websites never experience a DDoS attack, however majority of the attacks that do happen are focused regarding the content of the website, such as gaming, adult sites, online communities, chat rooms, internet radios, etc,.

If you dont host a website which would attrack script kids or real botnet owners, chances are good that you will never have to deal with such a problem. But this doeasn't mean that it might not happen to you, so its always a good idea to search for hosting which offers some level of protection against DDoS attacks.

For example a huge portion of the attacks seen in the gaming industry take place on private/pirate and fps multiplayer game servers, the main reason for these attacks are competitors. As stated above the requriements for such attacks are a Credit Card or PayPal account to hire a booter, stresser or DDoSer.

The major reason of getting hit by DDOS attack is that your competitor do not want to you to get success and they try everything to hurt you or want to put your site down.
This is one of reason why I got many DDoS attacks in the past when my sites have high traffic and got #1 ranking on Google search, some competitors didn't like that and they tried to push it down by DDoS attacks.

[*]Some script kiddie just learned what's DDoS and randomly found your website
As I read it is not easy to do a DDoS attack, it needs a large of PCs to attach to a target (websites or IP address)
If it is easy, I wanted to try DDoS myself and see how firewall on my website works or not.

It seems like some hosting providers, especially the larger more well know ones, are often targets of DDoS attacks. When I was with one a few years back I was always getting my sites hit by them. Ever since I left that host I am not seeing them happen like I was.

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a crack to make an online service inaccessible by sending a huge sum of web traffic from multiple sources. Some the reason why DDoS attacks are initiated:
Cause damage to the reputation and business of competitors when they are doing well.
Due to money which can be demanded in exchange for stopping the attack.
Personal rivalry against a company or a government website etc.

I've been DDoSed several times in my life. It's always hateful people, ( EG. gaming community OR hosting competitors as stated before me ).
Hence, it is important to actually some level of DDoS protection.

The most basic would be using cloudflare to hide all your IP addresses so they won't know the IP your website is hosted on. A more expensive option would be going for a host with DDoS protection. Please note most DDoS protection offered by hosts are shared among all users on that single server ( or even multiple servers ), so the level provided might actually be below what is stated.

DDOS attacks can be based on several reasons, in most cases it's hackers with an agenda. The other reasons are based anyone with a credit card who wants to put a website down , because they can. DDOS can even been done by bad scripts when cross communicating with other servers.

Hello,
Maybe they target big companies or small ones and some do it for the fun of it.
I use cloud flare for protection.

what causes that and how to avoid it?
I know many website witch has ddos because someone does not like his content, for commercial -> if your website has lower price, many game project has incoming DDOs.

To avoid it you must check content before post in internet, and use AntiDDOS if you want 99% protect your website.
