What is a Firewall and How Does It Work?

In my VPS control panel, there is an option to enable firewall for my IP. I enabled it but I don't know how does it work? What is exactly a firewall? can anyone explain me?

    Thanks
    Harry

A firewall is a security device that can be a software program or a hardware device. In your case its a software firewall that you have enabled.Firewall is mainely used to secure your server , for closing non operational ports from where the server can be hacked. It also helps you to protect your server from DDOS attacks (9 not completely but at some extent)

If you have enabled the firewall , the firewall itself will take care of the things opening the required port and closing the non operational ports of the server.

what control panel are you running on the VPS ?

I would not assume this. Even after enabling the firewall, you should still check to make sure everything is correctly configured for your needs.

    Hi Harry

I would not just enable the firewall without knowing exactly what rules it is using or you could cause serious connectivity issues with your VPS.
A firewall in simple terms is a data filtering system. For example you might want to restrict access to a service such as the web server if the VPS is a web development server so no one can view your sites while under development apart from yourself or those you want to grant access.
