Good day forum,

I am currently planning an announcement with one static website that is 20 MB big (it has mostly images). It's one single page. The thing here is that I do not know how many visitors I will get in the first 1-3 days. 25000 in the worst-case scenario and 500.000 (or more) if it gets popular. How do I calculate bandwidth/traffic? Is it as simple as using ~25 MB per visitor? Would that mean that 500.000 visitors equal 12.5 TB of traffic?

I suppose that I should start with a shared hoster and upgrade to cloud if I get a storm of people. Which hoster should I choose? I am looking for a fairly cheap hoster that doesn't want to entangle me in their one to three year deals because I am expecting a big storm in the first 3-5 days and then little visitors after. I also think that I won't need to host the website for longer than 3 months so it would be convenient not to pay for a whole year of which I will only use 25-30% of.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

It is not hard to find out how many visitors you are having a day, just installing Google analytics and you can know more about traffic/visitors there

Otherwise, you can use these tools that suggested in these threads

When you have a hosting and a hosting panel, you will know how much traffic/bandwidth you have a day/month.
What hosting panel are you using for your websites?

With the size of your site, I would you start with a shared hosting, there are some good ones here

When your site grows with huge traffic then you will have to upgrade to a VPS but it's the problem of the future, you now need to focus on increasing traffic for your sites. Don't go with cheap hosting, you will get what you pay for. Choosing a decent hosting package to make sure your site run smoothly and fast, and serves as well for your visitors. You can pay monthly or 3 month period, that should have a discount for you.

Well if you are concerned about the traffic a CDN like CloudFlare might help you save up some bandwitdh, otherwise unmetered shared or VPS plans are the way to go. Considering your website is static it should be able to handle quite a bit of simultaneous viewings, besides that there is several other factors such as the allocated CPU/Ram of the shared hosting plan and website optimizations.

I see that BlueHost and GoDaddy have "unmetered" bandwidth and don't talk numbers. Are ~5 TB traffic in the first few days still within in the scope or will they limit me?

Stay away from these hosting providers, I used both hosting companies and left their services after 6 months. Bad support and low quality hosting services. Don't care about banwith unless your sites has thousand of visitors daily but it can save up your bandwidth by using a CDN.

Well usually unmetered bandwitdh means unmetered, therefore it comes without limitations, but if the provider throttles the data transfer rates that is a different story. My suggestion would be to carefully read their terms of service before purchase.
Your best option might be to look into smaller to mid range providers rather than hosting conglomerates, which horde thounds of shared accounts per server.

Using a CDN as HostBastic suggested would be a good way to move off a lot of your bandwidth. I would definitely start out with a VPS for this project, and if you only need it for 3 months, just sign up for the monthly payment plan.

To answer your first question though, yes you had the formula correct. The bandwidth is figured out by all the elements on the page, their size X the number of visitors.
