I have a budget and want to start with a small dedicated server, 8 or 16 GB of RAM but with these specs I can go with a good VPS but pricing is a bit more cheaper. What hosting plan I should pick, a VPS with high specifications or a small dedicated server with low specs?

What are you going to be hosting if you don't mind me asking? Once I know this I can perhaps point you in the correct direction. Usually if you need dedicated resources you want to go with a dedicated server or even a KVM vps but again that depends on the budget, specs and mainly the resource usage.

I will host some high traffic sites and running web tools

Both are dedicated sources but in a term of using, dedicated server has seem many advantages.

Go with a dedicated server with SSD drives, you don't have to worry about host suspending you for retarded stuff using more resources than available to you and what not. A dedicated server takes off so much hassle, its also better in terms of control and security. The ram though will up paying price are you sure you need that much ram? Id say pretty much get your optimization plan down depending on your budget and go for a dedicated server. Remember ram cost is going up so better optimize good and try and use least ram as possible.

Can you share spec of both servers (CPU, RAM, Disk type space, bandwith, etc.) and prices, so we can tell you what is better option.

I would go with the dedicated server. As R Langley mentioned you won't have issues with high resource usage since you are the only one on the server. You have full control of the hardware resources too.

I think the VPS could actually be a better option depending on who you host with and how much you are willing to spend. Companies such as Linode offer rather promising RAM allocations for a fair price, and it is easy to scale.

I have seen many offers like this between VPS and dedicated offers. I can not exactly remember number of CPU cores or RAM...but there are many out there. I just want to know which is better as according to me, dedicated server can be a good choice in term of comparing between VPS and dedicated servers

It's is what I am thinking to.

Do you need a managed server? If so, then I would choose VPS as it will be cheaper. If unmanaged then probably a dedicated server would be better. It depends on your budget and what is more important better specs or better value for money?

What is your actual budget if you do not mind me asking? As you may or may not know, not all Virtual Private Servers or small Dedicated servers are created equal.

With that budget I'd say start with a VPS. It's going to be hard to find a dedicated server - depending on your location at that price with a suitable control panel included. Start small think big, then get big and be big is my motto.

With that budget definitely take VPS after you can go with higher VPS or dedicated if your VPS can't handle website traffic and monitoring.

Yes this is a good advice and it make me remember about the thing I updated from shared hosting to a VPS plan when my website traffic increased and my hosting required an upgrade to handle the amount of that traffic.

After saying that your budget is from $40 to $65/mo, I would also advise you to choose a VPS. You can get a high quality virtual private server with really good features for this price.

MotionGrafika, according to your budget and needs, VPS definitely sounds like a better option.
Take time to do the research, because prices might vary depending on a host. Maybe even make a table to compare that data. It's still the recurring cost we're talking about here.
With VPS, you'll have the control and that matters, especially for high traffic sites and web tools.

Id definitely recommend a VPS with your budget.
Also remember the licenses such as cpanel tend to cost less on VPS than on dedicated servers.
VPS also gives you the ability to scale the resources much easier if you are consistently using more.

Yeah, VPS for the budget. You could get a dedicated server for around that but it would be at the upper part of that. Around 50-75 for something with okay specs. You can get wholesale pricing of course, but you also run into possible network issues with overloading.

Also if support is a factor, than a VPS would be the best specs to support ratio imo.

What I haven't heard here is whether you need managed services. If so, then yes, a managed VPS would be the way to go. If no, then there are plenty of dedicated servers you could procure in that price range.

I'd recommend to go with a dedicated server if we are talking high load websites here, especially if budget is virtually the same as that of a similar VPS.

A Low end Dedicated server is old and outdated hardware which is bound to fail sooner or later, since that hardware comes with plenty of work hours before you rent the server. While a High end VPS depending on the provider should be hosted on new or alteast penultimate generation hardware which has little working hours and life expectancy is generally speaking longer. If your hosted with a VPS provider that is not overselling their server nodes the performance should be superior. Not to mention nowadays its easy to get a KVM based VDS, which will offer all of the benefits of a dedicated server minus the cost and trouble.
