I'm worried about IPs getting blacklisted at spamhaus or spamcop if I share a hosting account on my VPS for my college to use. If his email is reported by email services and get blocked then my IP address can be affected? How to avoid getting the IP or email blacklisted?

Hi BillEssley,

This will only be a problem is he starts sending SPAM.
I would recommend you enable DKIM and SPF for any of his domains use strong passwords and keep an eye on mail delivery reports to see what is being sent.

If you are sending many emails you need to add button unsubscribe button to your email. It may help

Also, if you are sharing VPS you can get separate IP.

That is correct and there is really no way to prevent your server IP from being black-listed besides active monitoring to identify any spamming activity before it becomes a problem.

good day

Whm has the option of limiting the mails per hour, this mitigates the massive sending of spam

I recommend you an affiliation mxtoolbox.com

They will help you unlock the ip when it is blacklisted

The easiest way to NOT get blacklisted is don't let spam be sent from your server. As soon as you see suspicious email being sent suspend the user and resolve the issue. It is really an ongoing battle but you must monitor it always.

Configure your firewall to log all outbound activity on port 25 from all machines on your network to help track down any machines that may be relaying mail.

Use a firewall, mod_security and make sure all scripts, themes and plugins are up-to-date and that will help prevent spam to be sent from the server. I suggest using HetrixTools to help you monitor all your IPs, and they will notify you if any of your IPs become blacklisted. You should also check everything at Hotmail too as they don't allow automatic checks, unfortunately.

If you are going to share your server with any one, Make sure you ask these to him / Get these done before sharing

1. Always try to keep the thirdparty software like wordpress and joomla secure as hacking in such things is the most common way of spamming now a days. Please ask them to have enough protection against this login brute force attacks.
2. Keep all plugins updated and make sure they remove unwanted plugins and themes from the account time to time.
3. Never use simple passwords for Email accounts, Database user and also for Wordpress/joomla admin accounts.
( You can set a minimum password strength required for all accounts now in cpanel)
4. Put a maldet scan or some other custom scan method for your accounts on a daily / weekly basis
5. If he is just a normal mail user and do not have to sent more emails like newsletter, then limit the hourly mail limit to a lower limit like max email per hour to 100 or below.
6. Setup DKIM and SPF for all domains in your account and if possible Setup DMARC record as well for all accounts.
7. Disable Boxtrapper in tweak settings
8. Change the default setting of accepting non existent mails to your default account to reject saying account do not exist.
9. If you have a CSF firewall installed, add a CC to RELAY Email templates so that you can be aware of any kind of spamming and can block the script or change the password of the compromised account in the starting itself
10. Getting a Modsec for the server with Free Comodo rules is also suggestible as it will block a lot of attacks / compromise attempts.

I hope these much steps will be a good start for you to incorporate other member or friends to your server.

Very important like you say.

I use LastPass for all passwords and it works great as it also creates a unique password for each website.
