Since there has been little activity on the forum, I thought I'd start a somewhat interesting conversation.

I am curious what is the very first dedicated host (or shared host if you want) that you remember? Many of the first guard have disappeared, been absorbed, changed names, etc. I've been around for a while, but I would like to know what others remember.

I will save my dedicated server host memory for now, but I believe my first shared hosting was a company called thread.net. Honestly I am not even 100% sure if that was the name! This was nearly 20 years ago so my memory chips from that time are certainly deteriorated.

I'm not sure how many of you got into hosting by way of first needing hosting, but that's how I started. I think I moved through two or three hosts, and then I eventually started doing hosting myself.

What's your story?

JoseQ

PS - To the mods, if there is a more appropriate forum for this, feel free to move. I am more curious about the [popularly] known dedicated hosting history, but once I started writing it just went into generic history.

Hello JoseQ,
Your thread is a really good idea. About the forum sections, there is no restriction to talk about a subject. So you thead seems to be at the right place.

I have bought my first shared hosting plan nearly 10 years ago. The company was free-h.org, and the only reason to choose them was the monthly billing when almost all shared hosting provider was asking for a year. And yes, I also got into hosting because at first I was needing hosting.

And when I have launched my hosting project, I have also learned how to create a website, and the most part of the linux basics.
After I have learn all the sysadmin stuff by trying to have the fastest hosting platform. With a control panel in the beginning and then without it.

But I have also get some issues with some providers, for huge DDoS against my network sometimes ^^

Jose , Nice thread :) Having some nostalgia to remember those old days and how we all started our hosting life..

Well My story is entirely different as I started working as a Linux sysadmin back about 8 - 9 years and my first site was a free subdomain with wordpress.com and then I tried adding a personal site with some free cpanel hosting site just to study the basics of cpanel hosting (as my early days I mainly work in plesk servers ) and then I directly got a vps for all my studies and sites from budgetVM.

Sub-domains! This actually reminded me that the website I referenced above wasn't actually my first. My very first [non-student] website wasn't actually even a domain. It was based off of my ISP (frontiernet.net back in 1996) and then the /~username deal. Yikes. That was a completely useless website that I tried to launch with free greeting cards and that kind of stuff. It was a huge flop. Didn't even remember that one, geesh... =)

The thread.net hosted site was my first site where I actually had a domain. This was back in 1998 when registering a domain had to be done via InterNIC (Is that right?) and they cost $135 per year! Hosting wasn't bad, I think I had 200MBs of storage for $20/mo. I wonder if it was 20MBs. Heheh!

The good 'ole days. =)

First dedicated server - 2004 from theplanet.com ( The current name is Softlayer ). It was an Intel Celeron or something like that. I remember the price, with a Cpanel it was around $127/month.

My very first dedicated host was with LayeredTech, and AMD Barton or Sempron, I can't remember. Was for a personal project.

Interesting question, I could remember the first dedicated server I used because it happened 3 years ago, when I had problems with current VPS and my friend suggest me to buy a dedicated server at hetzner (Germany) I have not known about this brand name before ( it is really a slow dedicated server) and after 3 using days I left it to a dedicated server in Canada (OVH) and it is managed dedicated server from a web hosting providers ( also my friend) but 1 year later I left it because my hosting provider didn't support me on web hosting issues, websites got many downtimes and he didn't do any thing to keep them active.

Now I am still using OVH for hosting some websites and other VPS hosting providers like Ramnode, linenod, Vultr, Digital Ocean for my sites and my clients' sites.

Ah I forgot, I also am suing some VPS packages from offers on this forum for my clients :D and YES providers here are providing quite quality services.
