I have never made a website by myself but I would like to do so. I first went to GoDaddy or Namecheap to purchase a domain name. Now what's next? I would hear your suggestions to make a website with the easiest and cheapest way.

Thanks.

Hi Emily,

Ok good you have your domain name, do you have your own VPS or hosting account ? if not you will need one.

You have 2 choices for designing a site

1. A content management system such as WordPress
2. Hand coded custom site. (I do not recommend HTML templates)

If your using WordPress you can get some decent looking themes for your site, but if want to do lots of custom modifications this will require a knowledge of WordPress codex, CSS and HTML. A hand coded site is very hard to do if you don't have HTML, CSS, PHP etc knowledge. I would recommend you search Google for some beginner web design tutorials, make a simple 1 page site and improve it as you learn more. For a hand coded site I would suggest you learn to use a framework such as Bootstrap once you have mastered the web design basics.

The easiest? SquareSpace or any hosting provider who supports Weebly.

If you really would like to have an easy to make website you would either need to order a hosting account from a provider that you feel is good for you. Then setup a Content Management Script such as WordPress or Joomla or you can use a SiteBuilder app (which some companies provide for you) and will allow you to make premade websites and customize them. If you would like to use something different, there are always companies such as Weebly or Wix which will provide you an interface to create a premade custom website. Personally I don't find them that good but they do the job for those getting started.

In order one website to go live, you need 3 parts: domain + hosting + website source.

In this your case, you've just only had the 1st part, that is your domain name. So the next steps are you should buy hosting and make a website.

About buying hosting, you can buy it from many big guys such as: Godaddy, iPage, Fatcow,…Especially with Godaddy hosting, you can buy using coupon just only for $1/month. Or you can research many other big guys to compare their service each other and choose the suitable one. You buy hosting as simple as you buy the domain.

After you have your domain and hosting, the next step is choosing the website source to build your website. The most commonly open source that is Wordpress. You can visit https://wordpress.org/ to download the source for free and install it on your hosting. Don't forget to read carefully about the document before install. At this stage, you have domain, hosting, and a website installed on that hosting.

The next step is you need to point your domain to your hosting. The pointing process is based on each domain registrar you purchased. Read them at registrar website document. Basically, you just need to replace their default DNS to your hosting DNS that your hosting provider give you.

That're all you need to run a website. Good luck to you.

Hi Emily,

You already have a domain, and you don't make websites yourself. You can search for website builder hosting. A website builder is easy to use for creating a website. New website builders have WYSIWYG(What You See Is What You Get) designer, which means you can drag and drop website parts and design your pages the way you want and are the easiest to use.

We have added website builder to our hosting. If you would like, you can give your opinion about which website builder to use in this poll
