If I were to buy a dedicated server with the following stats:
Server Brand: Dell PowerEdge
Processor Make: Intel XEON
Number of Processors: Two
Number of Processing Cores: 8 Cores
Total Memory: 8 GB
Memory Type: PC2-5300P
Hard Drive Size: 2TB (2000GB)
Hard Drive Type: SATA/SSD
Internet Port Speed: 1000 mbps

How many VPS would you recommend I sell?
How much should I charge for each VPS?
I'm kind of new to this, but want to start selling VPS

Thanks!

My advice : start learning how to manage some VPS for yourself at first.
Because 8GB RAM is not enough to sell VPS, with any hypervisor you will have to keep some RAM for the host. And the disk of 2TB seems to be a HDD, not a SSD.
To manage VPS you can start with VMware vSphere 6 (free without vCenter), Proxmox VE 4.2(free), Virtualizor(Paid), SolusVM(Paid), Cloudmin(free or paid) or Xen Server.

But before asking how many VPS you can sell, you have to know what are you planning to sell (Linux ? Windows ? Web Hosting ? Remote Desktop ?)

32GB ram should be enough for you to start the vps plan

Hey peteynessx, as VirtuBox advised, you should increase RAM before thinking about selling VPS packages from it.

8 GB is not enough to have a strong server and serve your customers

What is your budget for this dedicated server?

Depend what OS you will offer as @VirtuBox ask you before, then how will you configure VPS with dedicated ram or shared ram how much ram for VPS etc.
For you dedi you have to leave 1-2GB (better 2GB+) for system etc.
If you plan to have 10 VPS with 2GB you need 32GB, 10 VPS with 4GB - 64GB and so on.

My opinion is that 100$ isn't enough for 8 core xeon with 32GB and 2TB SATA

OP with this specification you will can host up to 6 VPS of 1GB RAM.
How would advise you to get dedicated with faster CPU and higher amount of RAM e.g 32GB

The main issue with VPS hosting is that you are limited on RAM/CPU .

The specifications you have mention are good for providing Shared Hosting

If you want to keep "the budget as low as possible"

We would suggest you to start with reselling VPS like we say in other thread our resellers prefer to resell our VPS hosting than Shared Hosting.

As a beginner, you will get more profit from reselling than paying costs for colocation / renting Dedicated Servers and monitoring (not mentioning the DDOS protection which is a MUST).

It really depends on what virtualization you are going to host, the different virtualization would give you different answers on that topic.

Well as others pointed out, your server spec might be a bit low end to host many VMs, but you can still host a lot containers (OpenVZ/LXC).

I would try to create 15-20 512MB OpenVZ containers with that spec, should be good if there's no abusers or resource intensive.

As to the price per VPS, it depends on your business model, you can name your own price for high or low profit, that's up to you.

Technicall, you could probably squeeze about 30 barely functioning KVM or Xen VMs from this setup. Ideally, however, you would make 4-8 servers, each with 1-2 CPU cores per server. Some clients will want a VPS with 8 cores or greater. You may want to look into Dual Processor Intel Xeon E5-26XX servers for future considerations.

You can use SolusVM VPS Management to Sell VPS With OpenVZ you can sell Linux VPS (Overselling allowed)
How much you can sell ?
>Its according to the Resource you are providing to the vps servers

By the way you have Overselling option enabled for OpenVZ Virtualisation ! using KVM You can Sell both Windows & Linux Servers but in KVM You can oversell only the RAM

HDD Overselling is not allowed !

How many VPS would you recommend I sell?
The magic number to how many you can sell is 15. Always go for 15 ;)

How much should I charge for each VPS?
What does your business plan say?

The only way to answer your questions;

- depends on your server
- what type of plans you're going to sell
- the amount of customers on the server
- your operation costs

I'm sorry I have to disagree with you, there is no magic number. ... Going into the topic, you have very little RAM. So I';d advise you to stick with a control panel like SolusVM. If you do go with that setup, you'll still be very limited. The amount of CPU cores, RAM and overall processing power is all important when trying to create a stable environment for your customers. Please consider upgrading your RAM ASap.
You can start off by selling a few oipenvz boxes >> make some money >> perform some server upgrades >>> and continue the cycle.

By the way, $100 USD for the specs mentioned is bit much, you might want to look around for some sale and you will find a better deal. I don't think it is appropriate for me to advertise for the company I work for here but I do know that you can DEFINITELY find better prices for better hardware elsewhere.

Hope that helps.

The magic number was a joke. In any business, there's never a magic number. There's a minimum number needed for the operation to work...but asking how many customers can fit on a server leads to;

- what should I name my company
- how do I transfer a customer to my server
- which shirt goes with this cereal
- should I advertise using adwords

The person said they were new, so with it comes new questions which sometimes shows they would rather jump in before knowing what they're actually jumping into.

Next time, I will say the magic number is 348...no matter what size Server or VPS. :)
