Yes and no. It depends. Your eCommerce store can get away without using HTTPS, but it is not a great idea to go without it and here's 3 reasons why:
1. HTTPS badge ensures trust to the customer. There are often TV news stories every year during Christmas time urging customers to do their shopping only on https sites.
2. You get a little SEO bonus when you use it.
3. If you decide to change your HTTP site to HTTPS at a later date, you will have to re-do your SEO campaigns again, and your website will be indexed as a different site by Google. In other words, all the campaigning you did for your HTTP site will be lost.
