I am wondering what factors make you go with Dedicated or Colocation? Is it how you manage accounting parameters? Is it upfront cost? Or what? and why?

The first factor is money. If you need a custom server with as example 24x3TB HDD, you will pay each month the price of buying yourself a server..
And normally, you will not need colocation until running very big projects. And i think there is less and less users of colocation because each years servers are faster, cheaper and there are so many way to have performance with virtual infrastructure.

It depends.

What are you doing? What are your expenses? How much is your income? Can you manage a network? Etc, etc

When deciding when to move from leasing servers to Colo, you have to weigh both sides and compare the numbers.

Colo will save you money in the long run, but costs a lot more up front. It can also be more challenging.

Typically, Colo is only time and cost effective if you have a half rack (21u) or more worth of servers.
