I am confused between Virtualmin and VestaCP. I like VestaCP's UI, but there is no file manager ( only commercial plugin ) for VestaCP. Which one should I choose ?

I haven't used Virtualmin but I have only good things to say about VestaCP. Their support team is very helpful, too.

What are the requirements to install VestaCP on a VPS ? Will it work on Ubuntu 14.04 ?

Shouldn't be a problem. This link might be helpful.

I heard of these web control panels but have not ever tried them

I would go with paid versions like cPanel, Directadmin..which you will have more support and they are stable and better security than free ones.

If you need only simple feature, you should look to serverpilot.io ( cloud web server manager ) or if you want something more powerfull there is also easyengine.io. It's the trending panel at the moment.
If you want stable and secure panel, cPanel or Plesk are good options. For few $ per month you will have good features and regular updates.
Personnaly, I love plesk for php7, ssl let's encrypt, nginx reverse proxy, install in 2 command lines. From 5$ a month, less if you buy it from your web hosting provider.

What are serverpilot and easyengine? there are hosting panels to help me managing shared account and VPS hosting?
Why don't you recommend to go with Virtualmin or VestaCP? are they having problems like bugs or lack of functions?
I am using cPanel license $19/month for my VPS and feel good with it, I don't know more Plesk but would give it a go when I am possible.

VestaCP is not bad at all, but like the most part of free control panel, there are missing features and not enough updates.
Easyengine is a command line tools to manage your vps with ssh using some simple command. And serverpilot do the same but offer a remote control panel. I recommend them because they offer the best performances and are totally free (serverpilot is free but there are premium plans).
You should look at the new release of Plesk, named Onyx which include some awesome features and cost less than cPanel

Try Webuzo, it's a free control panel from Softaculous ...

Check demo: http://demo.webuzo.com & http://demo.webuzo.com/enduser/ ... it has almost all of the features like cPanel, you can also change web server, mysql server easily within minutes ... Check the demo for more and you will understand it's importance :)

Thanks

I'm doing some looking into getting and setting up my first VPS and checking out some different control panel options. I haven't come across Webuzo being mentioned yet. How does it compare to Virtualmin and VestaCP in terms or ease of installing and setting it up?

I like the fact that it looks like the softaculous panel that I am familiar with.
