I would like to know what could be done if you have a new dedicated server the first time? The action plan in my head right now is to run commands to see what's going on with the server and its features. Is this a good plan to begin with running that server? I would like to get some insights on what to normally do in this case.

What are the necessary things that I need to know to better perform the administration of the server?

Back to the basics first - what OS are you running?

1. Change the root password
2. Run the latest updates to make sure we're running the latest stable kernel for the OS
3. Change SSH port
4. Secure using IPtables or firewalld - or even CSF if warranted
5. Configure backups

Those are just a few of the things we encourage our customers to do when they sign up.

1. Change the root password
I know this, using passwd root

2. Run the latest updates to make sure we're running the latest stable kernel for the OS
Can you elaborate this? never heard of this before

3. Change SSH port
Run vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Find where it says # Port 22
Remove # and change 22 to my port number.

4. Secure using IPtables or firewalld - or even CSF if warranted
Installed.

5. Configure backups
What are the details for this step? how to config backups?
