Someone wants me to market a university in Tampa, Florida on my website that I am building, the caveat is that the website I am working on is localized heavily for Denver, Colorado. (not even close to Florida for those outside of the U.S.) Is that really even possible? All my micro data, social profiles, marketing, press releases, everything is all regional to Colorado.

Would Google ignore me, dilute my rankings, or penalize me for being so off topic?

From the sounds of it your website is about universities regardless of locations so I would say adding a new one can easily be brought into it without it looking odd with regards to user experience... Either way Google wont give a sh** and it certainly wont penalize you... There are many sites that have many topics which are unrelated e.g. look at news/magazine sites etc... Sports, fashion, beauty, ....

The one thing which can happen is the more links you add to a page the more dilluted the link juice is shared out to those overall links... In your case I dont see how that can be significant unless you make dramatic changes to layout etc...

The way I would do it is to add one link from the home page to a new silo for the new one (Tampa) and from there add new sub pages of which inter-link and then link back to the parent with sculpting link juice for the one page which you want to rank... With that said there are various silo models so choose one which works for you... I would also add a few links from existing content targeting the new page where appropriate (cross-silo) as those pages sound like they have some backinks and represent your most juiced up pages...

With that said - when you add new content/posts etc that too can also impact rankings in a similar way with blog posts being moved to archive with the new ones displayed on top i.e. think of the number of clicks to get to a given post/page...

On that note - don't worry too much... and best of luck!
